Thinking of buying fire extinguishers online?

The price may look cheaper, but make sure you understand what is, and is not, included.

A supply-only extinguisher delivered by courier will not have been properly commissioned at your premises. It may also be the wrong type or rating for the risks in your building, positioned incorrectly or supplied without the necessary signs and commissioning records.

Under BS 5306-3, extinguishers should undergo competent on-site commissioning before being placed into service. BS 5306-8 covers their correct selection and positioning.

A competent extinguisher technician will check that the equipment:

✅ Has not been damaged during delivery
✅ Is correctly charged and ready for use
✅ Is suitable for the identified fire risk
✅ Is installed in the correct location
✅ Has the appropriate signage and records
✅ Is added to an ongoing servicing programme

The Responsible Person also has a legal duty to put appropriate fire-safety measures in place and ensure fire-safety equipment is properly maintained. Ordering a red cylinder online does not, by itself, fulfil those responsibilities.

Once commissioning, installation, signage and servicing are added, the apparent online saving may quickly disappear.

Choose competent supply, commissioning and installation, and make sure your equipment is suitable, traceable and ready when it matters.

A fire extinguisher is life-safety equipment, not simply another online purchase
