Changing Weather, Changing Risks: Your October – November Fire Update
As we move from October’s autumn routines into November’s early winter pace, we’re taking stock of last month’s fire safety insights and turning our attention to the steps that keep homes and businesses safe throughout the colder months.
October brought a noticeable shift in seasonal fire risks. With darker evenings and cooler temperatures, households across Northamptonshire began switching the heating back on, bringing renewed reminders about boiler servicing, flue checks and safe use of log burners. Fire crews emphasised the importance of sweeping chimneys before winter kicks in fully, after attending several early-season incidents linked to soot build-up and faulty appliances.
The month also saw continued attention on electrical safety. As part of wider autumn campaigns, local services encouraged residents to test smoke alarms, review escape plans and ensure extinguishers are up to date; themes we echoed in our own guidance. Schools and public buildings were a focus too, with one Northamptonshire secondary school temporarily closing several classrooms while fire-safety improvements were completed, a reminder that vigilance across all premises remains essential.

As we move through November, seasonal pressures continue to rise. The run-up to Bonfire Night brought its usual spike in calls nationally, mostly linked to bonfires not fully extinguished or fireworks thrown incorrectly. Local crews will now shift their focus to winter-readiness messaging, including safe use of electric blankets, avoiding overloaded sockets, and keeping festive decorations away from heat sources as the Christmas season approaches.
Businesses across Northamptonshire are also preparing for year-end compliance checks. Many will be scheduling maintenance of fire alarm systems, extinguishers and emergency lighting before the December rush. We’ve already begun supporting several clients with pre-winter inspections, ensuring their fire safety equipment is reliable, compliant and ready for the colder months.
